Data Migration
This is the process of transferring data from one form to another. Most businesses have a variety of systems both old and new and data on various media formats. Often there will be need to migrate to different formats. Some common scenarios where this data conversion would be employed would be:-
- Recover old or corrupted data
- Digitise paper documents e.g. for a new document management systems
- Convert to popular data formats such as HTML, XML, PDF, word documents etc
- Transfer audio to text
- Convert old formats such as microfiche to digital form
Many companies are now looking to migrate old EDMS (Document management system data) discs to other document management solutions but the data and sometimes storage media can be difficult to cope with. These may be transferred from optical, WORM, CD, tape and disc data formats and convert the image /document files as well as the associated index data."
The transfer process is facilitated using special analysis tools and conversion programs, which allow the cleaned data to be easily imported into new systems. This may also involve data "cleaning" to remove unwanted or corrupted data.
The need of data migration
Data conversion is often required where there is a large amount of data to be transformed and the cost of manual conversion would be prohibitive. Another common problem is where the data is hidden in old proprietary data formats that cannot be exported - except to the same vendor's later version of the software!
