Anti-Spam Solutions
Protection from spam
With the widespread popularity and low cost of email, it is not surprising that it widely abused. Every day, millions of people receive dozens of unsolicited commercial e-mails. The posting of unwanted emails is termed spamming. Whilst some may be offering genuine business services or products most are of a more questionable nature. Criminal gangs and hackers also send out spam. Many can contain inappropriate content or even viruses/spyware.
Due to the very low financial costs, spamming is viable for spammers as there are minimal operating costs beyond the management of their mailing lists, and it is difficult to hold senders accountable for their mass mailings. Because the barrier to entry is so low, spammers are numerous, and the volume of unsolicited mail has become very high. The costs, such as lost productivity and fraud, are borne by the public and by Internet service providers, which have been forced to add extra capacity to cope with the deluge. Spamming is widely reviled, and has been the subject of legislation in many countries. However, it still proves to be financially very rewarding with few (if any) penalties for the guilty.
The online magazine, IT Week reported that Email traffic volumes experienced very large increases during 2007. While spam has been an ongoing problem for many years, they reported an increase in that the rate of growth in spam messages leading to total email traffic growing by between 25 and 35 percent in the early half of 2007.
The costs of spam
There are four main costs with spam.
- Employee time reading through/deleting unwanted received emails
- Decreased staff productivity due to extra time required to clear out emails
- Extra organisational resource consumption. Spam takes up storage space and network bandwidth.
Businesses could be charged extra by their ISP's for the extra bandwidth used.
The California legislature found that spam cost United States organizations alone more than $13 billion in 2007, including lost productivity and the additional equipment, software, and manpower needed to combat the problem.
The European Union's Internal Market Commission estimated in 2001 that "junk e-mail" cost Internet users £10 billion per year worldwide.
