Voice over IP (VoIP)
What is VoIP?
Today's organisations rely on wide variety of communications technologies including the telephone. Many are utilising a modern enhancement called voice over IP (internet protocol). This data transmission protocol allows the transmission of encrypted voice data over the public internet or other packet switched networks. VoIP is also being used by large organisations such as BT, IBM, etc. It is also known as IP telephony.
Voice over IP protocols carry telephony signals as digital audio, typically reduced in data rate using speech data compression techniques, encapsulated in a data packet stream over IP. There are two types of public switch telephone networks (PSTN) to VoIP services: Direct Inward Dialing (DID) and access numbers. DID will connect the caller directly to the VoIP user, while access numbers require the caller to input the extension number of the VoIP user.
The advantages of VoIP
VoIP offers a number of benefits which makes it particular attractive to businesses. Broadly these are:-
- The ability to transmit more then one telephone call down the same telephone line.
- Secure calls using standardized protocols (such as Secure Real-time Transport Protocol).
- Low cost of calls especially to international destinations.
- Additional services offered such as three-way calling, call forwarding, automatic redial, and caller ID; features that traditional telecommunication companies (telcos) normally charge extra for.
- VoIP is location independent. Only an internet connection is needed to get a connection to a VoIP provider. For instance, call center agents using VoIP phones can work from anywhere with a sufficiently fast and stable Internet connection.
- Large number of low cost VoIP providers.
- Easy integration with other services available over the internet e.g. video conferencing
- Infrastructure already in place
- Low investment costs.
- Ability to link multiple sites across the world over the companies existing or new WAN's (Wide Area Network) and VPN's (Virtual Private Network)
